Doodle Inspirations – January 8, 2021

As we get back into the work groove following the holidays, here are some stories that got us talking last week:

Over 200 Google employees are taking a stand early in the year forming the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU). While Alphabet employees explained their motivations via Twitter, it doesn’t appear there is currently a clear list of demands for the union. Rather, the union has been developed with the intent to promote inclusivity and ethics at Google. With recent stories of harsh work/life balances at tech companies, we’re interested to see how this impacts future union efforts.

While Quibi may have been short lived, its content may be finding a new home. Roku is currently in advanced discussions to acquire the short-form streaming service’s content. Acquiring Quibi puts more owned-content on Roku’s ad-supported platform. We’re curious to see how Roku will incorporate ad units with the short episode lengths (10-15 min episodes), and mobile-specific production.

March Madness is happening this year and is taking some cues from the NBA. The NCAA Tournament will take place entirely in Indianapolis and surrounding areas with 68 teams competing. The NCAA is working to finalize logistics around attendance, and who will be permitted to watch games in-person. We’re waiting to see what sponsorship opportunities will be available, both in person and on television.
